Surfing Praia dos Aivados

Praia dos Aivados, also called Praia do Buzinheiro, is a long, narrow strip of sand between Porto Covo and Vila Nova de Milfontes, reached by an unsigned dirt road and left without facilities. That keeps it quiet. It is a consistent, exposed beach break with several peaks and hidden rocks, and it suits surfers who can read rips and look after themselves. Beginners are better off at Malhão, just to the south.

The surf at Praia dos Aivados

Several left and right peaks break along the beach over sand with patches of rock, and the sandbars shift, so the best bank changes through the year. Aivados is a swell magnet: it picks up west and northwest swells readily and often has rideable waves when more sheltered beaches are flat, though big winter swells can turn it messy. Easterly winds are offshore; the north wind that builds on summer afternoons blows it out. It works across the tide.

The main hazard is the rips, which can be strong, and there are rocks and hidden stones in the lineup; one piece of advice passed on by surfers who know it is not to paddle out through the middle. With no services and a long dirt track to the car, don't surf here alone on a big day. Autumn is the prime season and winter brings the power, while a small summer swell can make it friendly for intermediates. Crowds are rarely an issue, and the beach has hosted surf contests.

Photographing surf at Praia dos Aivados

The beach faces west-northwest, so shoot in the morning with the sun behind you; late afternoon gives backlit spray and a sunset over open water. There is no pier or headland lookout here, so the sand and the top of the path down from the parking area are your vantage points. Peaks sit roughly 100–200 m out, and a 200–500 mm lens covers them. The picture at Aivados is emptiness: a long beach, pebbles at the foot of the low cliff, one surfer on a peak. Water shooting is for strong swimmers only because of the rips. Bring everything you need, including water, since there is nothing on site.

Getting there

Take the road from Porto Covo toward Vila Nova de Milfontes and, after the hamlet of Ribeira da Azenha, turn right onto a wide dirt road; it runs about 3 km to the beach and has no signs. Most cars manage it, but drive slowly, especially after rain, when puddles and mud appear. Park at the end and walk down. There are no facilities, so bring food and water. Porto Covo and Milfontes are each a short drive away.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Praia dos Aivados?

Autumn gives the best mix of swell and offshore mornings, and winter brings more power, sometimes too much. In summer Aivados still picks up small swells when other beaches are flat, but surf before the north wind rises in the afternoon. Look for a west or northwest swell with an easterly wind.

Is Praia dos Aivados good for beginners?

Not really. Strong rips, rocks in the lineup and no services make it a spot for intermediate and advanced surfers. On a small summer day an intermediate surfer will enjoy it; beginners should take a lesson at Malhão, just to the south, or at São Torpes.

Where can you photograph surfing at Aivados?

From the sand or from the top of the path down from the parking area, with a 200–500 mm lens for peaks 100–200 m out. Mornings give front light on this west-facing beach, and the empty length of sand is the shot.

How do you get to Praia dos Aivados?

Drive south from Porto Covo toward Vila Nova de Milfontes and turn right onto a wide dirt road after Ribeira da Azenha. The track runs about 3 km to the beach and has no signs. Go slowly, particularly after rain, and bring everything you need, because there are no facilities.

How do I get photos of my session at Praia dos Aivados?

Record your session on Makai with this beach and the time you surfed. Makai matches it with the photo shoots published here in the same hours: you see protected previews, pick the photos where you appear and ask the photographer for the originals.
