Praia da Franquia, Milfontes

Praia da Franquia is the town beach of Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the north bank of the Mira just inside the river mouth, below the Avenida Marginal. It is a river beach, sheltered from the open Atlantic and popular with families, kayakers and stand-up paddlers. Surfers should be realistic: on most days there are no rideable waves here, and the tidal current is strong. For surf, look across the river to Furnas or north to Malhão.

The surf at Praia da Franquia

Franquia faces south across the river rather than out to sea, and a rocky outcrop separates it from Praia do Farol at the lighthouse. That layout is why the water is usually calm and why local beach guides describe the wave action as weak. Only a large west or northwest swell forcing its way through the mouth, mostly in winter, brings small, soft waves onto the sandbanks, and on those days the ocean-facing beaches have far better surf. The real force here is the river.

The Mira drains through the mouth on every falling tide and the ebb current runs fast, pulling swimmers and paddlers toward the mouth more easily than they expect. If you do paddle out, do it on the incoming tide and stay inside the lifeguarded zone in summer. For proper waves, cross the bridge to Furnas from October to April, or drive about 5 km north to Malhão, where schools teach through the summer. Franquia still works as a base: kayak hire, cafés and a beach webcam are right here in town.

Photographing surf at Praia da Franquia

Franquia looks south across the river, so from late morning the sun sits in front of you over the water; early morning and the hour before sunset give the most usable side light. The Avenida Marginal above the beach is the natural viewpoint: from there you see the river mouth, the lighthouse point to the west and the dunes of Furnas across the water.

When a winter swell is running, the waves breaking around the mouth are a few hundred metres away, so a 300–600 mm lens is needed; the same spot gives wide frames of the estuary with paddlers and boats. In winter the sun sets toward the mouth, which makes for strong silhouette shots against the light. Shooting from the water is not advised here because of the current.

Getting there

Franquia is in the centre of Vila Nova de Milfontes, roughly two hours by car from Lisbon or from Faro airport. Walk down from the Avenida Marginal; free parking is close by. Toilets, lifeguards in the bathing season, cafés, restaurants, accommodation and a campsite are all within walking distance. Furnas is across the river by the bridge or, in summer, by boat.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Praia da Franquia?

Rarely, and mostly in winter, when a big west or northwest swell pushes small waves through the river mouth. Even then Furnas and Malhão are usually better. In summer Franquia is calm river water, suited to swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddling rather than surfing.

Is Praia da Franquia good for beginner surfers?

For swimming and paddling, yes; for learning to surf, not really, because it seldom has waves. The strong tidal current, especially on a falling tide, is the main risk. Beginners get more from a lesson at Malhão in summer or at Furnas between October and April.

Where can you photograph surfing at Praia da Franquia?

From the Avenida Marginal above the beach, looking over the river mouth toward the lighthouse and Furnas. Waves only show on bigger winter swells and break a few hundred metres away, so bring 300–600 mm. Early morning and late afternoon give the best side light.

Is there a webcam at Praia da Franquia?

Yes. A live beach webcam covers Franquia, and there are separate cameras for the ocean side of Furnas and for Praia do Farol at the lighthouse. For checking surf, the Furnas and Farol cameras are more useful; Franquia's view is handier for the river and the tide.

How do I get photos of my session at Praia da Franquia?

Record your session on Makai with this beach and the time you surfed. Makai matches it with the photo shoots published here in the same hours: you see protected previews, pick the photos where you appear and ask the photographer for the originals.
