Surfing Praia das Furnas

Praia das Furnas lies on the south bank of the Mira river mouth, across the water from Vila Nova de Milfontes. Half the beach faces the river and half the Atlantic, and surfers use the ocean half. Tucked inside the mouth, it is the most sheltered surf beach around town: often flat in summer, at its best when big winter swells are too much for the open coast. Respect the river current.

The surf at Praia das Furnas

Waves break over sand on the ocean-facing side of the beach, as lefts and rights off banks that move with the river and the winter storms. Because the mouth is protected, Furnas needs a solid west or northwest swell to wake up; the same swell that has Malhão closing out often arrives here smaller and cleaner. An easterly wind is offshore. Lower tides tend to give the best shape, but that is also when the river is draining hardest: the ebb current accelerates through the mouth as the tide falls.

Stay out of the channel and don't let a drift carry you toward it. October to April is the season, and some Milfontes schools move their lessons here from Malhão over those months for exactly that reason. On a small summer day there may be no surf at all, and the beach belongs to swimmers and families. Crowds are moderate: lessons, surfers from town and a few bodyboarders. Water runs from about 14 °C in winter to 20 °C in late summer.

Photographing surf at Praia das Furnas

Furnas faces west into the mouth, so morning light comes over your shoulder from the dunes and lights the wave faces; by late afternoon you are shooting into the sun, which suits silhouettes and backlit spray. From the sand on the ocean side the peaks are close, and a 200–400 mm lens is enough.

For a different frame, cross to the town side: from the lighthouse point at Praia do Farol you look southeast across the mouth to Furnas, which puts the afternoon sun behind you; bring 400–600 mm for that distance. The wooden walkways above the beach give a slightly raised angle without climbing anything. What makes the picture here is the setting: river, dunes and open sea in one frame. Water shooting is only for strong swimmers who understand the current, and never near the channel on a falling tide.

Getting there

From the centre of Vila Nova de Milfontes, drive over the Mira bridge and follow the signposted local roads to the beach; Rota Vicentina paths also lead there on foot or by bike, and in summer a boat crosses from the town side. The car park is unpaved and wooden walkways lead to the sand. The bar-restaurant, lifeguards and beach services run in the bathing season, so outside summer bring what you need.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Praia das Furnas?

October to April, when west and northwest swells are big enough to push waves into the river mouth. Furnas shines on the days the open coast is too big or messy. In summer it is often flat. Look for an easterly wind and lower tides, and keep an eye on the ebb current as the tide drops.

Is Praia das Furnas good for beginners?

In winter it is one of the better learning spots near Milfontes, with sand underfoot and smaller, cleaner waves than the open beaches, and some schools teach here from October to April. The catch is the river current near the channel, strongest on a falling tide, so learn with a school rather than alone.

Where can you photograph surfing at Praia das Furnas?

From the ocean-side sand in the morning, when the sun is behind you, with a 200–400 mm lens. In the afternoon, shoot from the lighthouse point at Praia do Farol on the town side, looking southeast across the mouth, with 400–600 mm.

Is this the same Praia das Furnas as the one in the Algarve?

No. This Praia das Furnas is at Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the Alentejo coast in the municipality of Odemira. Another beach with the same name lies near Vila do Bispo in the Algarve, so check the town when you look up forecasts, webcams or directions.
