Surfing Praia do Malhão

Praia do Malhão is the long, wild beach about 5 km north of Vila Nova de Milfontes, backed by dunes inside the natural park. It is the area's most consistent beach break, picking up almost any Atlantic swell, and it doubles as a learning beach in summer and a proper test in winter. The one thing to know: there are rocks in the lineup and a rip that often runs through the middle.

The surf at Praia do Malhão

Malhão is an open, west-facing beach break with peaks over sand and scattered rock. Lefts and rights shift with the sandbanks along its length, from mellow shoulders on summer mornings to fast, punchy peaks when a proper swell arrives. West and northwest swells work best, easterly winds are offshore, and it breaks through the tide, with some surfers preferring the dropping tide. Summer brings small waves and an onshore north wind by the afternoon, and some Milfontes schools teach here from May to September.

From autumn to spring the swell has more power and the beach becomes intermediate territory; on big winter days it closes out and the town's surfers look for shelter at Furnas. Watch for the rocks in the lineup and for the strong rip that commonly forms in the middle of the beach. Weekdays can be almost empty, while a good swell with offshore wind draws a crowd from town. The northern section of the beach is an official naturist area.

Photographing surf at Praia do Malhão

Malhão faces west, so the morning sun sits behind you and lights the faces cleanly; late afternoon turns the beach into backlit spray and silhouettes, with the sun going down over the sea. The simplest vantage is the sand itself, level with the peaks, where a 200–400 mm lens frames a surfer 100–200 m out.

The low dunes and the clifftop path at the ends of the beach, part of the Rota Vicentina Fishermen's Trail, give a raised angle over the whole lineup; a 300–500 mm lens helps from there. What makes a frame here is space: a long, empty beach, dunes and one surfer on a peak. Shooting from the water is for strong swimmers only, given the rip. Stay on marked paths, because the dunes are protected and the cliff edges are soft.

Getting there

From Vila Nova de Milfontes, take the road north toward Porto Covo and turn left at the signs for the beach; the last stretch, near Brunheiras, is unpaved. It is about ten minutes by car. Park above the beach and walk down through the dunes. Facilities are basic: toilets, showers and lifeguards in the bathing season and a campsite nearby, with food and shops back in town.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Praia do Malhão?

September to May for quality, with autumn the most reliable. Look for a west or northwest swell with an easterly wind, ideally in the morning. Winter can be too big and closed out. Summer is small and friendly, but the north wind usually turns onshore by the afternoon.

Is Praia do Malhão good for beginners?

In summer, with a school, yes: the waves are small and some schools from Milfontes teach here from May to September. Outside summer, and whenever the swell is solid, it suits intermediates better. The rocks in the lineup and the rip in the middle are the reasons not to learn alone.

Where can you photograph surfing at Malhão?

From the sand with a 200–400 mm lens, or from the low dunes and the clifftop path at the ends of the beach for an elevated view, using 300–500 mm. Mornings give front light on the faces; late afternoon is backlit.

Is Praia do Malhão a naturist beach?

Partly. Since 2019 the northern section of Malhão has been designated for naturism, while the rest is a regular beach with lifeguards in the bathing season. The waves are the same along the whole beach, so just be aware of which zone you are in.
