Surfing Porto Covo

Porto Covo is a whitewashed fishing village south of Sines, surrounded by small coves. When surfers talk about surfing Porto Covo they mean Praia Grande, the cliff-backed sandy beach at the northern edge of the village, reached by a big staircase. It needs more swell than the open beaches nearby, so it comes alive in winter and is often flat in summer.

The surf in Porto Covo

Praia Grande faces due west, with cliffs and big rocks framing the bay and giving some shelter from the north. Waves break over sand with patches of rock, as lefts and rights: typically a punchier left toward the south end and a softer, peelier right toward the north. That shelter means it needs a west or northwest swell with some size behind it, which makes it a good call in mid-winter, when heavy swells overpower exposed beaches such as Aivados and Malhão.

On moderate swells it is a forgiving wave that longboarders and improving surfers enjoy. Easterly winds are offshore, and mid tide usually gives the best shape. Rips run along the rocks when the swell pushes, and there are patches of rock underfoot. In summer it is often flat; São Torpes and Vieirinha, a few kilometres north, are more consistent then. The smaller coves around the village, such as Samoqueira, are broken up by rocks; Praia Grande is the one to check first. Crowds stay light compared with Portugal's busier breaks.

Photographing surf in Porto Covo

Praia Grande faces west, so the morning sun comes from behind the village and lights the faces, and evenings are for silhouettes against the sunset over the bay. The best raised angle is from the clifftop at the top of the staircase, at the edge of the village, looking straight down the lineup.

The peaks are close in this small bay: 100–300 mm covers most shots from the top, and 300–400 mm gets tight action from the sand. The cliffs, the staircase and the rock outcrops give foreground that most open Alentejo beaches lack. Shooting from the water works on small days for experienced swimmers; stay clear of the rocks when a swell is running. Keep back from the cliff edge.

Getting there

Porto Covo is about 1 h 45 min by car from Lisbon, just off the coast road between Sines and Vila Nova de Milfontes. Praia Grande is at the edge of the village: park in the car park above the beach and walk down the large staircase. There is a restaurant at the beach and lifeguards in the bathing season, and the village has cafés, accommodation, campsites and a surf shop with rentals.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf in Porto Covo?

October to April, and especially mid-winter, when a solid west or northwest swell is big enough to wrap into Praia Grande. That is often when the exposed beaches nearby are too big. Summer is frequently flat; on those days, look at São Torpes or Vieirinha to the north.

Is Porto Covo good for beginners?

On a moderate swell, Praia Grande is a fairly forgiving wave and beginners can learn here with an instructor. When the swell is bigger, rips along the rocks and patches of rock underfoot make it a spot for intermediates. In summer, São Torpes is usually the easier place to learn.

Where can you photograph surfing in Porto Covo?

From the clifftop at the top of Praia Grande's staircase and the village edge above the bay, looking down the lineup with a 100–300 mm lens. Mornings give front light on the faces; evenings give sunset silhouettes over the bay.

Which beach in Porto Covo is best for surfing?

Praia Grande, the cliff-backed beach at the northern edge of the village, is the one surfers use. It is the main village beach, with parking above and a staircase down. The smaller coves nearby, such as Samoqueira, are split up by rocks and are mostly visited for swimming and scenery.
