Surfing Praia da Vieirinha

Praia da Vieirinha, officially Vale de Figueiros and also known as Pedra da Casca, is a wide sandy beach off the road between São Torpes and Porto Covo, inside the natural park. Local families, fishermen, surfers and bodyboarders use it more than tourists do. It is a beach break framed by rock reefs, with a large islet you can reach at low tide, good for improving surfers and used by surf schools.

The surf at Praia da Vieirinha – Vale de Figueiros

The beach faces roughly west, with sand in the middle and rock reefs and an islet around it. Waves break as lefts and rights over the sandbanks; on a northwest swell they bend in around the reefs and tend to run left off them, which gives the beach its playful shape. West and northwest swells work best and an easterly wind is offshore. Mid to high tide usually gives longer, hollower rides, while at low tide more rock shows around the islet.

In summer the waves are small and friendly enough for lessons; from autumn to spring there is more power, and on big winter swells it can turn heavy and messy. It is consistent enough to host regional contests: the local surf club ran a stage of the Alentejo coast inter-club circuit here in October 2024. Watch for rips along the rocks, and keep an eye on the incoming tide if you walk out to the islet. Crowds are usually light, even when São Torpes, a few kilometres north, is busy.

Photographing surf at Praia da Vieirinha – Vale de Figueiros

Vieirinha faces roughly west, so morning light falls over your shoulder onto the waves, and late afternoon gives backlit spray and a sunset beside the islet. Shoot from the sand, or from the top of the stairways above the beach for a slightly raised angle over the whole bay; the peaks sit 100–200 m out, so use 200–500 mm.

The islet and the reefs give foreground and scale that a plain beach break lacks, especially at sunset, and rock pools at low tide add texture for wider frames. Shooting from the water is for experienced swimmers because of the rocks. Stay on the paths through the dunes, which are protected.

Getting there

From Sines, take the coast road south past São Torpes toward Porto Covo; after Praia de Morgavel, turn right following the signs for Pedra da Casca. A paved car park with about 225 spaces sits above the beach, with stairways down to the sand. There are restaurants, lifeguards in the bathing season and surf schools, and the nearest shops are in Porto Covo and Sines.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Praia da Vieirinha?

Autumn through spring is the most consistent, with west or northwest swells and easterly winds. Summer brings small waves that suit lessons. Aim for mid to high tide, when rides tend to be longer and hollower; low tide exposes more rock around the islet.

Is Praia da Vieirinha good for beginners?

In summer, with a school, yes: the waves are small and the middle of the beach is sandy. On bigger days, and near the reefs and the islet, it suits intermediate surfers better. Rips run along the rocks, so beginners should stay in the sandy middle with an instructor.

Where can you photograph surfing at Vieirinha?

From the sand or the top of the stairways above the beach, with a 200–500 mm lens for peaks 100–200 m out. Mornings give front light on the faces; at sunset, use the islet and reefs as foreground.

Are Vieirinha, Vale de Figueiros and Pedra da Casca the same beach?

Yes. Vale de Figueiros is the official name, Vieirinha is what it is called locally, and Pedra da Casca is the name on the signs from the coast road between São Torpes and Porto Covo. The beach is in the municipality of Sines, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
