Surfing Matosinhos, Porto
Matosinhos is the long sandy beach on Porto's northern edge, running from the Leixões port breakwater south to the Castelo do Queijo fort. It is probably the most surfed beach around Porto, busy with surf schools for most of the year, and the metro stops a short walk from the sand. The one thing to know: it is a learner's beach first, and it comes into its own when the rest of the coast is too big.

The surf in Matosinhos
The beach runs for about 1.5 km and slopes gently, which takes power out of the waves and makes it one of the easiest places to learn in northern Portugal. The long Leixões breakwater at the north end blocks much of the north swell and wind, so Matosinhos stays surfable, and relatively small, when big winter swells close out more exposed beaches. In the middle, sandbar peaks break left and right; they start working at around 1 m of west swell and hold up to about 2 m (6 ft), with east wind offshore.
Near the port a right can form off the breakwater, but it is fickle, while the south end by Castelo do Queijo is more exposed, picks up south-west swell and has rocks. It works at all tides. October to June is the most consistent period; summer, especially August, is often flat, and sunny weekends bring crowds of lessons and swimmers. Hazards are mild on the sand but real: rips on bigger days, rocks at the south end, cold water, and water quality that is a known concern close to the port and the Leça river mouth, particularly after heavy rain.
Photographing surf in Matosinhos
The beach faces west-south-west, so mornings put the sun behind you and light both the waves and the surfers' faces, ideal for lesson and action shots; by late afternoon you are shooting into the sun, which suits silhouettes and sunsets over the sea. The surfing happens close to shore, so 100–400 mm from the sand is ideal, and 70–200 mm is enough for learners in the whitewater.
The seafront promenade gives a slightly raised angle along the beach, and at the south end the rocks around Castelo do Queijo frame the line-up, though they get slippery. Towards the north, the port breakwater and cruise terminal make an industrial backdrop that few surf beaches offer. Shooting from the water is easy on small days; just keep clear of lesson groups and loose boards.
Getting there
Matosinhos sits on the northern edge of Porto. Metro Line A runs from central Porto to Matosinhos Sul, a few minutes' walk from the sand, in roughly 25–30 minutes, and Porto airport is a short drive away. Street parking along the seafront fills on sunny weekends. Surf schools, board rental, surf shops and the town's many seafood restaurants are right behind the beach, which has lifeguards in the summer season.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to surf Matosinhos?
October to June is the most consistent period, when Atlantic swells arrive regularly and the breakwater keeps the beach manageable on big days. Summer, especially August, is often flat or very small, fine for first lessons but little else. Mornings are usually cleaner before the afternoon wind picks up.
Is Matosinhos good for beginners?
Yes. The gently sloping sand softens the waves, the breakwater gives shelter, and surf schools teach here most of the year, which makes it one of the busiest learner beaches in northern Portugal. Stay away from the rocks at the south end, watch for rips on bigger days and give swimmers space in summer.
Where can you photograph surfing at Matosinhos?
From the sand or the seafront promenade in the middle of the beach, with 100–400 mm and the morning sun behind you. The rocks around Castelo do Queijo at the south end frame the line-up, and late afternoon gives backlit sunsets over the sea.
Can you get to Matosinhos beach by metro from Porto?
Yes. Metro Line A runs from central Porto to Matosinhos Sul station, a few minutes' walk from the beach, in about 25–30 minutes. On a sunny weekend it is often easier than driving, because parking along the seafront fills quickly.
How can I get photos of my surf session in Matosinhos?
Post your surf plan on Makai with the dates you will be here, so photographers in the area can offer to shoot you, or browse surf photographers and message one before your session. Agree on what you will get before you paddle out.
