Surf in Figueira da Foz

Figueira da Foz sits where the Mondego River meets the Atlantic on Portugal's central coast, and its reputation rests on right-handers. Cabedelo peels off the river-mouth jetty south of town, Buarcos winds along the rocky shore at the northern end of the bay in winter, and in between lies one of the widest town beaches in Europe. The one thing to know: Buarcos needs a big swell, while Cabedelo works far more often.

The surf in Figueira da Foz
Cabedelo, on the south bank of the Mondego mouth, is the area's workhorse: a right that starts with a hollow take-off beside the jetty and runs in walls towards the shore over sand, with some rock near the wall. West to north-west swell and east wind suit it, it works at most tides, and the breakwater gives shelter from north wind. It regularly hosts rounds of Portugal's national surf league, the line-up gets busy when it is on, and rips run along the beach. At the other end of the bay, Buarcos is a right point under the Serra da Boa Viagem, with named sections such as Mina, Teimoso and Pedra Grande breaking over sand and flat rock.
It needs a solid winter swell to start, likes mid tide and north-east wind, and on the rare days when the sections connect it gives rides of several hundred metres; it is an intermediate-to-advanced wave with rocks along the inside. Between the two, the town beach, Praia da Claridade, is so wide that reaching the water is a walk in itself, and its softer beach-break waves are where many learners start. September to May is the main season; summer is often small and windy.
Photographing surf in Figueira da Foz
Cabedelo faces west, so in the morning the sun sits behind you on the sand south of the jetty and lights surfers riding towards you; by late afternoon the view turns backlit, with the sun setting over the sea. The peak breaks some way out, so bring 300–600 mm. At Buarcos, the seafront along the point puts you close to the wave: looking up the point from the town end, riders come towards you and 70–300 mm is often enough.
That shore faces south-west, so mornings give the cleanest front light and afternoons put the sun over the sea. The town beach is so wide that you need to walk most of the way to the waterline for anything shorter than 400 mm. Stay off the jetty when swell is breaking over it. Shooting from the water at Cabedelo or Buarcos is for experienced swimmers, given the currents and rocks.
Getting there
Figueira da Foz is about 45 km west of Coimbra on the A14, roughly two hours by car from Lisbon and about 1 h 30 min from Porto, and regional trains run from Coimbra. Cabedelo is across the Mondego bridge on the south bank, a short drive from the centre, with free parking, lifeguards in summer, showers and toilets. Buarcos is at the north end of the seafront, reachable on foot or by bike along the promenade. Restaurants, surf schools and accommodation are spread through town.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to surf in Figueira da Foz?
September to May, when Atlantic groundswell is most consistent and offshore east and north-east winds are common. Cabedelo works through much of that period, while Buarcos needs the bigger winter swells. Summer is usually smaller and afternoons get windy, which suits learners on the town beach more than experienced surfers.
Is Figueira da Foz good for beginners?
Yes, on small days on the town beach and the easier beach-break peaks, ideally with a school if you are new. The Cabedelo jetty right and the Buarcos point are for intermediate and advanced surfers: the jetty brings rips and rocks, and Buarcos breaks over flat rock in powerful winter swell.
Where can you photograph surfing in Figueira da Foz?
Cabedelo is best shot from the sand just south of the jetty with 300–600 mm in the morning. Buarcos is the most photogenic on a big day, because the seafront along the point puts you close to long rights with the Serra da Boa Viagem behind. The town beach needs a long walk to the waterline.
How long is the wave at Buarcos?
Buarcos is often described as Europe's longest right point. It has several sections along the rocky shore, from Mina and Teimoso near the cape to Tamargueira near town, and on big winter swells, when they connect, rides can run for several hundred metres. On most days, surfers ride one section at a time.
