Surfing Praia do Amado
Praia do Amado is a wide, open beach just south of Carrapateira, backed by hills and red and ochre cliffs inside the Costa Vicentina natural park. It is one of the most consistent beach breaks on the west Algarve and a base for several surf schools, so it works for first lessons and for good surfers on winter swells. Know where the rocks are before you paddle out.

The surf at Praia do Amado
Amado is a classic exposed beach break with lefts and rights over shifting sandbanks along roughly a kilometre of beach. The usual pattern is A-frames in the middle, a longer right off the north end and punchier, hollower peaks towards the south. It faces west-northwest and lights up on north-west to west swells with a decent period, holding up to around double overhead. East and north-east winds are offshore, and the cliffs give some shelter from the north wind.
Mid to high tide is generally best; low tide runs faster and dumpier. In summer the waves are small and friendly, and the whitewater inside suits beginners; autumn and winter bring the most consistent clean sessions and more power. Rocks sit under the sand in places and are not always visible, so ask a school or a local where they are. Bigger swells create rips. Summer days and weekends bring schools and plenty of surfers, but the beach is big enough to spread out.
Photographing surf at Praia do Amado
The parking area sits right above the sand, which gives an easy elevated angle over the middle peaks at 200–400 mm. For the full sweep of the bay, climb to the clifftops at either end; from there the lineup is further off and 400–500 mm helps. Because the beach faces west-northwest, mornings put the sun behind you and light the waves from the front.
By late afternoon the sun drops over the sea and shots from the land turn backlit, with glare and silhouettes. That is when shooting from the water pays off: facing the beach, you get surfers against the red and ochre cliffs in warm, low light. The water is manageable with a housing on small and medium days, but watch the rips once the swell builds. Along the clifftop route towards Bordeira there are wide views of the coast for establishing shots.
Getting there
Carrapateira sits on the N268 between Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, around an hour and a half from Faro airport or 25 minutes from Sagres. From the village, follow signs south to Praia do Amado; the drive takes about five minutes and ends at a large parking area above the beach, with wooden steps down. There is a beach café, surf schools with board rental and lifeguards in summer; for restaurants and accommodation, head back to Carrapateira.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to surf Praia do Amado?
October to March brings the best and most consistent waves, typically a north-west swell with an east or north-east wind. Summer is smaller but rarely flat, which makes it good for lessons. Aim for mid to high tide, when the banks break more evenly.
Is Praia do Amado good for beginners?
Yes, on small days it is one of the best learning beaches in the Algarve, and several surf schools teach here. Stay on the inside whitewater, near the lifeguards in summer, and keep away from the rocky patches. On big winter swells the waves get heavy and rips form, so beginners should stay out.
Where can you photograph surfing at Praia do Amado?
Start at the parking area above the beach, which overlooks the central peaks; a 200–400 mm lens covers them. The clifftops at each end give wider views at 400–500 mm. Shoot from land in the morning, then get in the water in the late afternoon to frame surfers against the lit-up cliffs.
Should I surf Praia do Amado or Praia da Bordeira?
Amado is the easier choice, with forgiving sandbanks, surf schools on the beach and parking right above it. Bordeira, the huge dune-backed bay north of Carrapateira, picks up swell and can be steep and fast; strong currents pull north along it. Beginners there should pick small days and go with a school, and keep an eye on the pull near the river mouth.
How can I get photos of my surf session at Praia do Amado?
Post your surf plan on Makai with the dates you will be here, so photographers in the area can offer to shoot you, or browse surf photographers and message one before your session. Agree on what you will get before you paddle out.
