Surfing Foz do Lizandro

Foz do Lizandro is the beach where the Lizandro River meets the Atlantic, about 2.5 km south of Ericeira's centre. It is the area's biggest beach and its main learning spot: a sand bottom, several peaks and room for surf schools, plus a left by the river mouth for better surfers. The one thing to know: when the swell grows, or the river runs high after rain, the currents get strong.

The surf at Foz do Lizandro

The river shapes the sand into banks along roughly 300 m of beach. There is usually a left on the south side near the mouth and an A-frame with rights and lefts in the middle; south-west swells favour the lefts, north-west swells the A-frames. The beach takes swell from south-west to north-west and is at its friendliest between about 0.8 and 1.5 m, with slow peaks, soft walls and plenty of whitewater for first lessons. East to north-east winds are offshore, and a southerly wind leaves the river-mouth left fairly sheltered.

Most guides favour low to mid tide for shape; high tide tends to go fatter, though a bigger swell can still work then. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons: winter swells can close out and pull hard, and summer is often flat. Watch for the river pulling seaward on an outgoing tide after rain, and for rips along the beach as it gets bigger. The rocky north end has reefs for advanced surfers, so keep beginners on the sand in the middle.

Photographing surf at Foz do Lizandro

The beach faces west, so morning light comes over your shoulder and lights surfers on the face; late afternoon is backlit, with the sun setting over the sea, which suits silhouettes of longboarders and learners walking out more than action. The peaks break fairly close to shore, so from the water's edge a 200–500 mm lens on full frame fills the frame at the outer banks and a 70–200 mm is enough for the inside and for lessons.

The boardwalk and café terraces behind the beach give a slightly higher, relaxed angle over the central peaks. On small, clean days this is the friendliest place around Ericeira to try shooting from the water with fins and a housing, as long as you stay out of the river current on the outgoing tide and clear of surf-school groups. The shot here is a clean left peeling off the river-mouth sandbar, or a first green wave with the sandstone cliffs behind.

Getting there

Foz do Lizandro sits on the N247 coast road about 2.5 km south of Ericeira's centre, under ten minutes by car, and roughly 45 minutes from Lisbon. A large car park lies behind the beach, with extra parking up the road on busy summer days. A boardwalk links cafés and restaurants, and there are showers, changing rooms, board and wetsuit rental, surf schools and lifeguards in the bathing season.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Foz do Lizandro?

For beginners, May to June and September to October: moderate swells of about 0.8–1.5 m, warmer water than in winter and fewer people than in high summer. Winter brings bigger swells for experienced surfers, but also close-outs and strong rips. July and August are busy and sometimes flat, so early mornings work best.

Is Foz do Lizandro good for beginners?

Yes, it is the best beginner beach in the Ericeira area. The bottom is sand, the peaks are spread out and whitewater is easy to find. Stay in the middle of the beach, away from the river mouth and the rocks at the north end, and learn with a school or an experienced friend, especially once the waves are above chest height.

Where can you photograph surfing at Foz do Lizandro?

From the sand in front of the central peaks, from the water's edge near the river mouth, or from the boardwalk behind the beach. Mornings give front light on this west-facing beach; use 200–500 mm for the outer peaks or 70–200 mm for lessons on the inside. On small days you can also shoot from the water.

Can you take surf lessons at Foz do Lizandro?

Yes. It is one of the main teaching beaches around Ericeira, surf schools and camps run lessons here for much of the year, and boards and wetsuits can be rented at the beach. Book ahead for July and August, when the sand gets busy, and expect groups to use the central peaks on small days.

How can I get photos of my surf session at Foz do Lizandro?

Post your surf plan on Makai with the dates you will be here, so photographers in the area can offer to shoot you, or browse surf photographers and message one before your session. Agree on what you will get before you paddle out.
